Learn how to create components in Figma to build consistent, scalable designs. Components are reusable UI elements that can be updated globally from a single source.
Click on the layer, group, or frame you want to turn into a component. You can select a single object or multiple objects together.
Look at the top center of the Figma toolbar. You will see a diamond-shaped icon. This is the Create Component button.
Click the Create Component icon. Your selection will turn purple and its icon in the Layers panel will change to a filled four-diamond symbol, indicating it is now a main component.
To use your component, find it in the Assets panel. Drag an instance of the component onto your canvas. Any changes made to the main component will automatically apply to all its instances.
Pro Tips for Figma Components
Quickly create a component by selecting an object and pressing Ctrl + Alt + K on Windows or Cmd + Option + K on Mac.
Select multiple components and click Combine as Variants in the right sidebar to group related components, such as different button states (default, hover, disabled).
Use a forward slash (/) in your component names (e.g., `button/primary`, `icon/close`) to organize them into categories within the Assets panel.
Right-click any instance of a component and select Go to main component to quickly jump to the source element for editing.
