Learn the simple drag-and-drop method to add professional video transitions between your clips in DaVinci Resolve, making your edits smoother and more engaging.
Ensure you are on the Edit page. You can select it from the page navigation bar at the bottom of the screen.
In the top-left corner of the interface, click on Effects to open the Effects Library panel if it's not already visible.
In the Effects Library, navigate to the Video Transitions section in the toolbox. You'll see various categories like Dissolve, Iris, Shape, and Wipe.
Click on your desired transition, drag it onto the timeline, and drop it directly on the cut point between two adjacent clips. The transition will snap into place.
Select the transition on the timeline. Open the Inspector in the top-right corner to customize its duration, alignment (start, center, end), and other specific parameters.
Pro Tips for DaVinci Resolve Transitions
Select a cut point on the timeline and press Ctrl + T (Windows) or Cmd + T (Mac) to quickly add the default transition, which is usually a Cross Dissolve.
For a transition to work correctly, the clips must have extra footage (handles) beyond the edit point. If not, DaVinci Resolve will show a 'Not enough frames' error.
Right-click on any transition in the Effects Library and select Add to Favorites. This makes it easy to find your most-used effects in the Favorites folder.
You can quickly change a transition's duration by clicking and dragging its edges directly on the timeline, just like trimming a clip.
