Learn the essential methods for importing assets like 3D models, textures, and audio into your Unreal Engine project to start building your game world.
Locate the Content Browser tab, which is typically found at the bottom of the main editor window. This is where all your project assets are managed.
Navigate to the folder where you want to add your new asset. It's good practice to create folders (e.g., 'Meshes', 'Textures') to keep your project organized. Right-click in an empty space and select New Folder to create one.
In the Content Browser, click the green + Add / Import button and then select Import to... from the dropdown menu. This will open your system's file explorer.
Browse your computer's files, select the asset(s) you wish to import (e.g., an .fbx, .png, or .wav file), and click Open.
An options window may appear depending on the asset type. For most common assets like static meshes or textures, the default settings are usually sufficient. Click Import or Import All to proceed.
Your new asset will appear in the Content Browser, often with an asterisk (*) indicating it's unsaved. Right-click the asset and select Save, or use the Save All button (Ctrl + Shift + S) to save all changes.
Tips for a Smoother Import Workflow
For a quicker method, simply drag asset files from your computer's file explorer and drop them directly into the desired folder in the Content Browser.
Maintain a clean project by establishing a clear folder structure from the start. Separate assets by type (e.g., 'Materials', 'Blueprints', 'Audio') to find them easily later.
If you modify an asset file outside of Unreal Engine, you don't need to delete and re-import it. Just right-click the asset in the Content Browser and choose Reimport to update it with your changes.
When importing an .fbx file, Unreal Engine can automatically create and link materials and textures if they are included in the file or located in the same source folder.
